Deaths Door Gin is produced by The Dancing Goat distillery in Cambridge, Wisconsin.
The beginnings of Death Door Spirits can be traced back to 2005 when a small group of like-minded people set about reinvigorating farming on Washington Island. Brothers Tom and Ken Koyen initially planted 5 acres of hard red wine wheat which, with the support of Deaths Door Spirits and Capital Brewery (they use it in their Island Wheat Ale), grew to some 1200 acres. The distillery grew very quickly to become one of the largest in Wisconsin but, sadly, the original company went bankrupt in 2018. However, in December 2018 The Deaths Door Gin brand was acquired, and is now made, by The Dancing Goat distillery.
Deaths Door Gin is made from a surprisingly minimal 3 botanicals, wild juniper berries from Wisconsin Island (Juniperus virginiana), coriander and fennel. The result shows that you don’t need dozens of botanicals to make an excellent gin.
The gin is named after a stretch of water off Washington Island. Washington Island and the Door Peninsula form a treacherous strait of water which was named, by early French explorers, Portes des Morts which translates as Door of the Dead or Deaths Door.
Perfect in a Negroni, Martini or Gin and Tonic. Best enjoyed as a gin & tonic with Franklin & Sons Pink Grapefruit & Bergamot tonic or try it with Fever Tree Tonic Water and an orange wheel with a sprig of mint for garnish. Try it on the rocks.
Death’s Door Gin has a full London Dry flavor without all of the bitterness because of our extraction process and the base spirit we use (i.e., our vodka). In fact, you can taste all three botanicals: loaded juniper berries up front; spicy, citrusy notes from the coriander seeds in the mid-palate; and a soft, cooling finish provided by the fennel seeds.
