Foursquare 2009 Cask Strength Rum is part of Foursquare’s Exceptional Cask Selection (ECS) range of Rums. This is the 17th release in the ECS series and it is a Single Blended Rum bottled at 60% ABV.
Foursquare Rum is produced by R L Seale, one of Barbados’ oldest trading houses, a family-owned business whose involvement in rum-making extends from father-to-son since 1820. The owner and talented head distiller, Richard Seale, is one of the region’s most innovative distillers and blenders and has a passion for producing perfect rum with great flavour. He also campaigns for for clarity in labelling of rums.
The Foursquare Distillery occupies the site of a former sugar factory that dates back to 1636 and, as one of the most modern and efficient rum distilleries in the world, is designed to be both highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Foursquare rum is made from locally owned and sourced sugar cane converted to molasses, fermented very slowly over 44 hours with South African yeast and then distilled. The rum is a blend of pot still and column still rums. The pot still rum brings complexity and flavour whilst the column still rum add balance and aroma.
Foursquare 2009 Cask Strength Single Blended Rum is a labelled as single blended rum which, in the proposed Gargano / Seale Categorisation of Rum, is a blend of pot still and traditional column rums, the direct comparison being with Blended Scotch Whisky – read more here.
Foursquare 2009 Cask Strength Single Blended Rum is a blend of twin column still and artisanal pot still distilled rum from a single distillery (hence “single blended rum”). The rum was distilled in 2009 and then placed into ex Bourbon whisky casks for ageing. The rum was aged and bottled as a 12 year old rum and released in April 2019. This is a pure unadulterated rum, bottled without any added colourings, sugar or flavourings. Bottled at a cask strength of 60% ABV.
From Foursquare:
Nose: A complex nose of Dried apricots, sultanas, and zesty lemon peel. Tamarind syrup, fudge, and a hint of cloves and caraway seeds. Crispy bacon,
cedarwood, toasted bread, and a hint of eucalyptus.
Palate: An oily mouthful of rich, dried summer fruits. Roasted pineapple, caramel, a touch of fresh ginger, honey, and dried coconut. Gentle hints of burnt rubber.
Finish: Complex, lingering notes of cinnamon,
honied-ginger, bitter cacao. A warming, astringent
persistence that builds with each sip.
Overall: This is a complex Rum, and one that delivers with a pleasing intensity. It feels like one might get lost in the nose alone, long before taking a sip. Taking your time is to be recommended as this Rum continues to reward exploration.
