Peller Estates Vidal Icewine is a Canadian dessert wine. It is made from 100% Vidal grapes and is bottled under the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA).
Peller Estates has been making wine in Niagara for three generations. Located at 43º latitude, the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario, home to Peller Estate, is within the same latitudinal range as Southern France, Rioja in Spain, Chianti Classico in Italy, and Oregon in the
Grapes for Peller Estates Vidal Icewine are always picked at temperatures of at least -10ºC, with the grapes frozen on the vine and hand-picked in the middle of the cold Canadian night. Once picked, the grapes are pressed immediately while still frozen releasing only one drop of pure extract from each grape. Authentic Icewine is very different from other dessert wines; before being picked in late December, the grapes freeze and thaw 8 to 10 times. Each time they freeze, new and more complex flavours are released into the juice from the grape. The wine is aged 100% in stainless steel. The signature of great Icewine is the balancing tension between sweetness and acidity.
The residual sugar for the 2019 is 185 g/L. This icewine is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Bottled under the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA), a system which has been established in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia to designate Viticultural Areas, regional appellations and sub-appellations, similar to the French AOC.
Vidal is a hybrid grape variety produced from the Vitis vinifera variety Ugni blanc (also known as Trebbiano Toscano) and another hybrid variety called Rayon d’Or. It is a very winter-hardy grape variety able to produce good sugar levels in cooler climates. It was developed in France in the 1930s with the intention of creating a grape variety suitable for the production of Cognac. Vidal never really caught on in Cognac but has found a home in Canada, North America and even in Sweden at the Blaxsta Winery.
Peller Estates Vidal Icewine has a bright yellow gold colour with a pretty aroma of white peach, golden pineapple, delicate floral honey and candied lemon. An exceptionally well-balanced Icewine exhibiting a burst of fruit flavour, bracing acidity and the perfect amount of sweetness. The pure, clean fruit flavours of tropical fruit and juicy peach caress the palate. Sweet citrus, guava, starfruit and a touch of honey linger on the long finish.
This is an extremely versatile sweet wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes. It’s also a great match for savoury options like pâté, salty appetizers, Indian curry, or Asian cuisine.
For the cheeseboard, try it with flavourful cheeses like aged Cheddar or a blue like Roquefort.
If you’re looking for a sweet finish, it’s perfect with fruit-focused desserts like lemon tarts, flan, apple strudel, crème brûlée, crème caramel, or syllabubs.
Try it in an Icewine martini for a sophisticated cocktail.
