Casal Mendes Vinho Verde DOC is made by Alianca Vinhos de Portugal (previously Caves Alianca), a company which started life as a co-operative founded in 1927 in Sangalhos in the Bairrada wine-growing region of Portugal.
Today, the company has several estates and around 600ha of land in regions including Alentejo, Douro, Dão, Bairradas and Beiras. In 2007 a major stake was acquired by Commander José Berardo and it became part of Grupo Bacalhoa. The Casal Mendes Vinho Verde brand was launched in the 1980s as Vinho Verde rapidly grew in popularity.
Vinho Verde is not a grape variety, but the largest DOC in Portugal. Literally translated it means “green wine” but should actually be translated as “young wine”. The DOC stretches from the River Minho in the north (the border with Spain), down the coast to Oporto and extends inland too.
Casal Mendes Vinho Verde is made from a blend of 60% Azal, 30% Pederna 30% and 10% Trajadura grapes.
