Chateau Pontet Canet is one of the most prestigious properties of the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. It was classified as a Fifth Growth in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.
The origins of the Chateau Pontet Canet can be traced back to 1705 when Jean-François de Pontet, who had made a name for himself at the court in Versailles, where he had held the position of Grand Ecuyer (Master of the Horse) became Governor of the Medoc and purchased a few acres of land to the north of the village of Pauillac which he turned into a vineyard. The vineyard was added to over the years and gained a reputation for producing high quality wines. In 1865, the estate changed hands for the first time and became the property of a wine merchant, Herman Cruse. The Cruse family kept the estate for 110 years, until 1975. The property has been owned by Guy Tesseron, the owner of Château Lafon-Rochet in St Estephe, since 1975. The estate consists of 120 hectares of vineyards planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.
The 2014 vintage of Chateau Pontet Canet is a blend of :
Merlot 30%
Cabernet Sauvignon 65%
Cabernet Franc 4%
Petit Verdot 1%
From Pontet Canet: “An intense crimson, the wine has a bewitching nose with clearly defined and precise fruit, underlined by mineral notes which connect the wine to the terroir from which it came. The full and elegant attack leads into a fresh, dense and silky mid-palate on chiselled tannins, followed by an impressively long finish. A harmonious and energetic wine and a great success.”
