Niepoort 2019 Vintage Port presented in 75cl bottles. The 2019 vintage followed on from the 2011, 2015 and 2017 vintages released by Dirk Niepoort.
Niepoort was founded as a Port House in 1842 and today is run by the 5th generation brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort. Despite being the one of the smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports (colheitas, garrafeiras etc.), they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port. The Niepoort house style is to produce balanced Ports, with great concentration, but at the same time fine and delicate.
2019 was an erratic growing year but following three successive small years, 2019 saw a return to more balanced yields in the vineyard. With reference to the 2019 vintage, Niepoort reminds us “All years are remembered for different and unique reasons, and 2019 will surely go down as a year with amazing natural, acid driven, balanced musts and very cool weather, reminiscent of the elegant year of 2008 – the perfect conditions in which the Niepoort style thrives!”
The grapes for Niepoort’s Vintage Ports are are sourced from several old vine vineyards in the Cima Corgo with ages of 80 to over 100 years old. All the components for Niepoort 2019 Vintage Port were trodden by foot in circular granite lagares with 100% of stems. The wines were racked soon after harvest, aged in “tonéis” in the Douro over the winter, and then moved to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia in March 2020. The wine is a blend of Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and others.
Please, note that Vintage Port needs to be decanted.
From Niepoort, “Brilliant appearance with a dark purple rim and concentrated depth of colour. The aroma is fine and subdued with only a hint of primary dark fruits and some spice. The true potential and style of this wine really comes together on the palate with wonderful integration of dark fruits with a grainy tannic structure, pairing volume with amazing balance and elegance and an impressive finish. In conclusion, the primary fruit on the palate is appealing at this stage, but it’s the balanced tannic structure which indicates great ageing potential for the future.”
Perfect with “Queijo da Serra”, Stilton or other blue cheeses and with egg desserts, like the portuguese “Pão de Ló”.
